Abstract

Background: Medicine is considered one of the toughest and most challenging professions worldwide. It requires medical students to study for endless hours, attend long clinical rotations, and give countless exams and tests. This makes it difficult for medical students to manage their day-to-day tasks along with their hectic routines.

Methods: The study was conducted through a cross-sectional study design from June 2021 to December 2021.  The study population was all undergraduate students of different public and private medical colleges. All undergraduate students from the first year to the final year of study were included in this survey. A questionnaire was designed to access how well the students were able to perform their academic tasks. The perceived stress scale (PSS) was used to collect data.

Results: A total of 412 responses were collected in the given period with students from age between 19 and 25 years. The mean score of the questions was taken, which was 33.59 (SD+ 11.87) with the lowest being 0 and the highest being 40. The highest score shows more prevalence of students suffering from these while the lowest shows that fewer students were likely to be affected and they coped well. The results showed that male students had a higher score i.e. 35.14 (SD 11.22) while that of females was 32.68 (SD 12.16). The students of public medical colleges had a mean score of 36.28 (SD 11.77) as compared to private medical students 32.23 (SD 11.70).

Conclusion: The research data was clear and concluded that Undergraduate medical students of Peshawar did experience some serious stress issues and psychological effects due to a lack of daily task management.
