BACKGROUND: As diabetes is not curable or reversible, the most practical way of tackling the disease is through prevention and awareness of the disease which requires adequate knowledge about the disease. The aim of our study was to find out the knowledge of diabetes and its associated risk factors in undergraduate Allied Health Sciences students.
METHODOLOGY: This cross sectional study was conducted on clinical students of various study disciplines at Rehman Medical Institute. Duration of the study was 6 months (March 2021 to August 2021). Sampling technique was convenient sampling. Date was collected through questionnaire consisting of three sections namely demographic information, DKQ-24 questionnaire and nine items assessing risk factors knowledge. Permission was taken from principals of all included colleges and consent was obtained from the participants. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22.
RESULTS : The number of total students enrolled in the study were 157.Frequency of females in the study was 74(47.1%) while male students were 83(52.9%). Majority of the students 79(50.3%), in different study disciplines on average, had marginal knowledge about diabetes while 29 (18.5 %) students demonstrated adequate knowledge and 49 (31.2%) students had inadequate knowledge. The number of students who correctly identified all nine risk factors were 55(35%).
CONCLUSION : Majority students in various health disciplines depicted marginal knowledge of diabetes mellitus. Knowledge of risk factors among students of different disciplines was good and majority of students correctly identified diabetes mellitus.
