Abstract

BACKGROUND: Acute abdominal pain represents a common and challenging clinical scenario in the emergency department, often necessitating prompt medical attention. It has diverse etiologies and potential for serious outcomes making it necessary to understand its epidemiology and effective management. Understanding epidemiology and effective management will help to enhance diagnostic approaches, optimize emergency care, and ultimately improve outcomes for individuals experiencing acute abdominal pain.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the causative underlying pathology and pharmaceutical management of acute abdomen pain in tertiary care hospitals.

METHODOLOGY: This is a cross-sectional study conducted at the Department of Surgery and Trauma Complex Saidu group of teaching Hospitals Swat (SGTH). The study was conducted on 213 patients, out of which 121 (56.8%) were male and 92 (43.2%) were female. Age distribution was divided into three groups.

RESULTS: Among 213 patients experiencing acute abdominal pain, 50 were identified with acute appendicitis, 35 with acute cholecystitis, 32 with renal colic, 24 with acute intestinal obstructions, 22 with a perforated duodenal ulcer, 20 with acute pancreatitis, 19 with strangulated hernias, and 11 with ectopic pregnancy. Among the patients, 110 experienced pain relief with ketorolac alone. Additionally, 100 individuals required tramadol in combination with ketorolac for pain management, while only 3 patients needed the combination of ketorolac, tramadol, and strong opioids for effective pain relief.

CONCLUSION: The study emphasizes the varied pain management requirements in acute abdomen scenarios. This insight contributes to improving emergency pain management protocols, offering a more customized and efficient approach. Ultimately, the study's findings benefit the medical community by optimizing patient care strategies in acute abdomen cases.
